This year marks the 15th annual Autism Awareness Month.
According to the National Autistic Society, one in 100 people are autistic and there are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. In the past, there has been so much stigma around autism and has resulted in many barriers between them and society. Often, children with autism are backed into a corner due to inequality, discrimination, isolation and a lack of understanding.
This month, we are focusing on empowering children with autism. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication (AutismSpeaks).
