I understand

Of course, qualifications, degrees and experience are key requirements to become a support worker, however, your personal qualities are still very important in this job sector! A job as a support worker can be very rewarding and you need specific traits to overcome the challenges that come along with it. `

Working people that have physical and mental disabilities can be demanding as they are some of the most vulnerable people you will meet, it is your responsibility to enhance their quality of life by providing emotional and physical support.

Here are some qualities you should have when looking for support worker roles:

A Sense of Humour

  • Working with the difficulties of some of the people you are responsible for such as mainstream schools, retirement homes and respite centres can have its challenges and is not always easy. It is up to you to see the brighter side and allow them to find joy even during challenging times! Your positivity can influence them and improve their mental well-being

Communication

  • Some people you will meet in your field of work may struggle to open up and share their feelings and emotions whether they have the physical ability to or not. Therefore, understanding the needs, activities and individual requirements they need to express their emotions will be extremely important in creating a good and trusting relationship with them!

Passion

  • In this job sector, your interest and involvement in their lives and your role will help you through everything! When you show how much you care, it can change the way you interact with the people you are supporting

Patient & Flexible

  • No day will be the same, your ability to adapt to unforeseen situations will come in handy as the mental and physical state of the person you are supporting may sometimes be unpredictable. You will need to be able to modify activities, conversations and events that occur as every day you will face a new challenge
